throw your hands in the air
so i gave my creative mornings talk this morning, which i wasn’t dreading in any way, but which was a source of anxiety. and then this afternoon, i had to go to the hand specialist to have a monstrous sliver removed from my palm (like 2-3 inches long and completely embedded). and that was a source of absolute dread. so now i’m just home from a beautiful dinner with my family and a good friend, and it’s all behind me, and i feel like this jack-in-the-pulpit, with my arms thrown wide in relief and joy. now i’m going to sleep for about 12 hours, and then i’m going to start soaking my hand in epsom salts. so it goes…

these smoke bush leaves were probably around 60 degrees fahrenheit when i photographed them. but i love the illusion of light and flame they give, on this day so close to autumn’s first real chill. this morning i’ll be giving a creative mornings talk at the minneapolis institute of art. it will be a supportive crowd of fellow creatives, but i have to say, i could use a little courage from the flame at the center of this photo. may it light my way, and more helpfully, may it speed me through 100 slides in 25 minutes! see you all on the other side…

Well, the flame within this smoke bush really did the trick cause, woman, you were on fire this morning. I just soaked it in. Thanks for a great start to my morning. I was able to say howdy to your mother on the way out. Also — I’ve always wanted a smoke bush in my small urban yard and this just sealed the deal.

So beautiful indeed … Annoucing autumn in midsummer :). It’s fascinating to see how the next season is always hidden in the current and sometimes, just within a day or two, it becomes so obvious that it’s just around the corner …

portrait of a date in time
i’m still fascinated by the idea that if you could take in enough sensory data in nature, including the temperature, the terrain, the angle of the sun, the relative development of the various flowers, trees, vines, mushrooms, nuts, berries, grasses, and leaves, you could predict the date to within, say a week. in that spirit, here is a portrait of august 23, 2017, in my backyard.

we’re just starting to see the first ragged formations of canada geese pass overhead in that heart swelling way they have of moving through the sky, announcing the changing of the seasons. i wish this beautiful fellow were joining in the migration.
