national bird

i don’t really have a quibble with the bald eagle as our national bird, but i could see any of the birds these feathers belong to as our national symbol. ben franklin actually wanted our bird to be the wild turkey. and how about a barred owl, talking late into the night in a friendly and convivial way, and then hunting silently and precisely through the woods by moonlight? how about a goose, adapting to wild and domestic waters, mating for life, and migrating thousands of miles on powerful wings? or even the pheasant? an immigrant like all the rest of us, beautiful and adaptive, and now a seamless part of the identity of the landscape. i could get behind any one of those visions of the united states. any of them. or all of them.
