words matter

words matter

my husband is a word guy. to him words matter. a lot. so, before i could type anything…i had to hesitate and ask myself; are these two plants codependent? parasitic? opportunistic? or simply serendipitous?  whichever word steve chooses, i would like to add beautiful. the contrast of the lime-green vine leaves with the deep-green cattail leaves is already delicious. and the red vines on the deep green leaves is even better.  so, where does that leave us? beautiful opportunism? parasitic perfection? stunning serendipity? or color-coordinated codependence? . . . steve just walked in. “that’s a bine, not a vine,”  he said. “a vine climbs with suckers, and a bine climbs by entwining  a support structure in a helix.” as i said: word guy.

Well I’ll be darned, I always wondered why hops are called bines. And a great many plants we call vines really aren’t, like mornings glories! Thanks Steve, I love knowing this!
