once again i’m awed and admiring of scientists’ abilities to name things. proteus is a greek god, often associated with the sea, who never tells a lie, but often changes shape in order to avoid having to tell the truth. hence our english word “protean,” or changeable. my point is, look at this protea flower, and tell me it is not in the process of changing from a seed head to a sea creature.
