yesterday steve and i hosted a photo shoot at our house. it was an all day event, from about 10 am to about 10 pm, and like this branch of black cherry leaves we cut from our woods as a prop, we are feeling a little droopy today. but droopy in the way you feel after a hard workout, when you know you’ve earned a good night’s sleep. there is nothing quite like working with a good team, and yesterday was one of the most impressive creative teams we’ve ever had the pleasure of watching in action. the twin cities are so lucky to have the talents and vision of bodega ltd. among us. meanwhile look for an article this fall in mpls./st. paul magazine featuring some of the incredible photography and styling that happened yesterday. i can’t wait to see my own house through their eyes.

this is not queen anne’s lace, but i know it’s related because it is in the carrot family. when we were in france, we saw a mid-autumn flower that had folded up into a sort of spider web tangle, and we kept asking everyone what it was. it was queen anne’s lace after the summer blossoms had begun to retract and fade. but since everything in france comes back to food, that october queen anne’s lace was described to us as “a kind of wild carrot.”

Wow – maybe it’s my state of mind, but this flower looks like it is covered with diamonds – a pave’ Queen Anne’s Lace : )

this daylily has turned itself into a trumpet, and the trumpet is blaring “summer! summer is here! summer! really! suuuhhhh-MMMEERRRRRRR!!!” i may have just spent an evening serenaded by green frogs, while watching the fireflies in the cattails, with a bowl of fresh picked blueberries in the fridge. and i will admit that these events may have affected my interpretation of the meaning of this day lily. maybe. sure.

let’s all agree to be different colors and sizes and live peacefully in our own spaces, happily adjacent to beauty that is valuable because it is other than we.

remember bill the cat, from the bloom county cartoon? the strung out orange tabby with the skinny druggie’s pot belly, who always sat slightly askew, and said “ack,” and “thhphthhhpphthhh?” this scraggly feather reminds me of bill the cat. it doesn’t want our sympathy. it just wants some gasoline to drink, in order to wash down that hairball.

Bill the Cat is alive and well! Check out Bloom County on Facebook. Berk Breathed was never so relevant, entertaining or poignant as he is now.
