we are relocating to France for five months, and i will be either en route or recovering from jet lag for a few days. your regular morning still blog programming should proceed without interruption, and i can only hope we’ll be able to say the same about delta airlines.

when my husband and i met, i was a black and white person, and he was a gray person. i was an engineer, he was a language major. i knew there was a right answer, he suspected there were many answers. i could balance a checkbook, he could balance angels on the head of a pin. black and white. and gray. there were times when it looked like it might be a very strange and lumpen joining of two lives. but we blended into each other enough that it looks a little bit like this feather now. different and the same all wrapped up into one. almost as if it was meant to be.

oh, how sad, and funny. The photograph is beautiful, in any case.

i love the expressions we come up with to compare the sizes of things. as big as a breadbox, as big as life, as long as your arm, the size of your thumbnail, the head of a pin, a mack truck, the ocean, the sky, all of creation, a speck of dust. woody allen telling diane keaton she has a spider in her bathroom the size of a buick. and, of course, this dinnerplate dahlia.

this is how i feel right now. we leave for france in 5 days. i am a little beetle who has just spent a week meticulously working through these vine leaves, and i just looked up, and there is an entire forest to go. gulp.
